GeodemographicTools for Target Marketing

Come see for yourself what two powerful electronic resources, Simply Map and Local Market Audience Analyst, can do to help you determine target markets for your business. Simply Map enables you to overlay demographic data, consumer spending and lifestyle data, and points of interest data on a map down to as small as a census block and tract. Local Market Audience Analyst is psychographic (lifestyle) data for designated market areas and counties. The features and capabilities of these tools will be demonstrated using a variety of practical examples. These tools can be used by businesses of all types, both for and not-for-profit. Whether marketing to consumers or businesses, you are sure to find many practical applications.

Competitive Intelligence Certification Program
Rhonda Kleiman, Economic Development Manager, Library System of Lancaster County, presents this five-part series in partnership with the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The program, designed for small to mid-size companies, teaches the basics of instituting a competitive intelligence capability within your company. This powerful professional development program teaches the skills necessary to become a capable user of competitive intelligence for business advantage. This program is ideal for business owners, analysts, marketers and executives. Competitive intelligence is more than just data gathering – it’s all about using the information in strategic ways to move the company forward. The program consists of five modules, each three hours in length, with hands-on participation. Classes are held in the training room at the Library System office. Included in the class fee are a binder filled with useful materials and additional resources for each module, and a book, “The Secret Language of Competitive Intelligence” by Leonard M. Fuld. Other “perks” include permission for graduates to audit future programs as a refresher, and a quarterly e-newsletter on competitive intelligence resources. Please note that this course is being presented as a series and will not be offered as single sessions at this time. The cost of series is $495 for Chamber members and $695 for nonmembers. Continues to lay the groundwork on how to find company and industry information. Points to consider will include use of NAICS and SIC codes; public vs. private companies; parent/subsidiaries relationships. Explore ways to find in-depth company information and big-picture industry trend information. Web and print resources will also be discussed. Demonstrations and hands-on-practice using several databases.

Session Four –Trade & Regional Business Journals, Magazines and Newspapers
These sources become very important when trying to locate information on privately-owned, small, or local businesses. Learn strategies for searching databases that include this type of information. Learn how to use current awareness tools, such as, RSS feeds and database alert
features. Demonstration and hands-on practice.

Session Five - Government Information; social media; General Trend Info; Wrap-up
A wealth of government information, including statistics, is available for various industries. Sources include economic census and current industrial reports. Learn how businesses are using social media for gathering competitive intelligence. Brief discussion of sources for information on general business and consumer trends. Wrap-up covers resources about the discipline of competitive intelligence.

The third workshop in the QuickSTART series focuses on marketing, which includes discussions about features and benefits, components of customer value, competition, target markets, marketing strategies to reach customers, how to identify key demographics, buying habits and behaviors of consumers, market size and realistic penetration, business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) strategies and cost elements as related to marketing choices.

Part 4 - Creating Financial Forecasts & Reports
The fourth workshop in the QuickSTART series focuses on the financial aspects. This lecture includes discussions on forecasting sales units and prices, financial risks and rewards, what are your true start-up costs, ongoing operating expenses, a modeling tool that helps you evaluate variable factors, setting benchmarks for tracking progress and the organization of all your financial information.

Part 5 - Funding Your Business
The final workshop in the QuickSTART Series deals with financing your business. The discussions will include sources of funds, financial statement analysis, accounting and bookkeeping systems, the six C's of credit, banking relations, ratio analysis, monthly preparation and review of financial statements. A bank loan officer will give an inside view of how a banker assesses the merits of business plans and loan application.
